A Guide to Sunset Family Photoshoots with Toddlers

As a Mum of two toddlers, I get the dread of a late sunset shoot. But I wanted to take a moment to share my insights on how to not only survive but truly embrace the magic of a sunset session with little ones. Summer brings extended daylight hours, providing the perfect backdrop for creating beautiful family memories. So let's explore how to make the most of this golden hour with toddlers in tow.

01 // Toddler-Friendly Sunset Adventures:

Sunset offers a magical atmosphere that most toddlers think being outside is an adventure and fun. We want to harness their natural curiosity and energy by turning the photoshoot into an exciting adventure. I always encourage them to run around, explore, and make the experience as enjoyable as possible. I have yet to come across a toddler who is not prepared to show my camera how fast they can run and do all the fun things at this time of day!

02 // Timing is everything:

Plan your photoshoot on a day when your toddlers are well-rested and energised. Avoid scheduling sessions after daycare or on days when they might be extra tired. Opt for a day when you're at home, allowing for a potential extra nap or a longer sleep.

This ensures they have the energy for their photoshoot later in the day.

03 // Prepping for the shoot:

To keep your toddlers fuelled and happy during the shoot, provide them with dinner beforehand. Pack a few extra sneaky snacks in your pocket just in case. Additionally, I like to suggest bringing their pyjamas to change into after the session. This way you can pop them straight on after the shoot and can hopefully fall asleep in the car on your way home for you.

04 // Creating a game plan:

The key to successful toddler photoshoots is to turn everything into a game. The more playful and engaging the environment, the more authentic and natural the photos will be. Embrace spontaneity, encourage laughter, and let your toddlers be themselves. The goal is to capture those genuine moments of joy and curiosity.

ANNNND a sneaky little trick many of my clients tell me. On the way to the shoot, their kids often think that I am Emma Wiggle, so we just run with and make everything about singing and dancing.

Embracing sunset family photoshoots with toddlers is not only manageable but can be an incredibly rewarding experience. By planning ahead, considering timing, and creating a playful atmosphere, we can capture genuine moments that will become cherished memories.
